Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune disease with antibodies directed against the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. The classic symptoms include excessive urination, thirst, and weight loss. If untreated, the blood sugars levels progressively increase, and the body makes keotones as an alternative energy source for the brain. A by-product of this keotone production is acid, and this can lead to a life-threatening condition called Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA). Treatment is insulin therapy, and there are several different regimens available such as multiple daily injections or insulin pump therapy.
